Hey Ezra, this sounds like a really cool idea. I'm somewhat new to Rails still, but I have a few years experience in XHTML/CSS coding and design; and I would love to help out with it. This seems like a project that the Rails community as a whole could really benefit from. Please let me know if you are still interested in getting this thing off the ground. Maybe we could submit a project request to RubyForge and start gathering help?

Are you still interested in this project? I'm not only willing to help with coding/design, but I can most likely donate a dedicated server for testing/development. Please e-mail me.

Great idea. I would love it. Especially if it will be easy to add on plugins. Just like locomotive with the bundle package. Also, making it a self contained application will be great.

I'd like to help out as far as I could Ezra, I think that a hosting panel could be a great project for a rails app and interface: cpanel could definitely be improved upon.

Kinda like "myRails" (a la mySQLAdmin) ??
I think its a great idea. I would like to help out to the extent that I can. I have some architectural type experience (ERP systems) but not too much hands on coding (yet).

I think sooner or later there is going to be a need for a consolidated deployment/control/management tool for Rails. I woul be very interested in helping out with this project as much as I can (testing at the very least)

Some tools to auto delete log files and other regular maintenance would be great. For those of us who are not experienced in setting up cron jobs and/or just not aware of best practices to keep things running efficiently.

Well thats the question isn't it? ;-) I would like to make it work in either case. So probably the version for a dedicated server would have more features and control, but I would also like to support a shared account like textdrive. I'm thinking about having a lighttpd config file generator and access to spinner, spawner, reaper and all that. So yes I will be supporting shared as well as dedicated. I will let you know when I get something up and running.

I'd be interested in testing it. Would this be built for a dedicated host only, or would it work in conjunction with a shared hosting account?

Rails/Lighttpd Hosting Panel.

I have started work on a pet project to build a lightweight hosting control panel for rails/lighttpd servers. I am interested to see if there is interest in a project like this.

I plan on making it so you can create rails projects and start and stop lighttpd and your fcgi processes. Basically a web based panel similar to Locomotive.

So my questions are… What other features would people like to see in a set up like this? I’m thinking of also letting you run your rake tasks and get them pretty printed to the interface and also allow switchtower commands.

Thoughts?

Also this is a call to arms for anyone who would like to join this project to help out. Interface design or ruby/rails skills would be most welcome. Or leave a comment if you want to help test as well.
